Podgorica – Kolašin – Biogradska Gora National Park – Morača Monastery – Morača Canyon
The Belgrade–Bar railway, stretching 476 km, is regarded as one of the most impressive rail lines in Europe. It was opened on May 28, 1976. The famous “Blue Train” also traveled this route, carrying as its first passenger former Yugoslav president Josip Broz Tito, together with his wife Jovanka and the state leadership of all republics and the Federation. On board this train, Tito also welcomed a number of prominent political figures, including Nehru, Nasser, Arafat, Breschnew, and Mitterrand. Within Montenegro, the railway runs for 175 km, and its highest point is Kolašin, at 1,032 m above sea level.
Kolašin is a town in northern Montenegro, located 72 km from Podgorica. Sitting at 954 m above sea level, it is known as a year-round destination for both winter and summer holidays. Just a few kilometers from the town lies the well-known ski resort on Bjelasica. Thanks to its elevation and exceptional climate, many describe Kolašin as an aerial spa.
One of the main highlights for visitors is Biogradska Gora National Park, the first national park proclaimed in Montenegro, in 1952. It covers 5,650 ha, while its protection dates back to 1878, when the area was granted to Prince Nikola Petrović, ruler of Montenegro. Since then, it has been known as “Knjažev zabran” – the Prince’s reserve. Its greatest natural treasure is the Biogradska Gora rainforest, spanning 1,600 hectares.
At the center of this forest lies the beautiful Biogradsko Lake, the largest and best known of the many glacial lakes within the national park. The park’s rich flora and fauna have long attracted scientists, research studies, sightseeing tours, and nature lovers eager to experience its unique beauty.
Morača Monastery, built in 1252, is among the most important Orthodox medieval monuments in Montenegro. It stands on the right bank of the Morača River, in the widened section of the canyon, set within a natural valley of striking scenery in the municipality of Kolašin.
