Bjelasica rises in the heart of Montenegro, in the country’s central continental region, where it spreads evenly in four directions and forms a broad circular shape. Covering around 630 km², the mountain stretches roughly 30 kilometers in length and width. Its borders are marked by the large rivers Lim and Tara, as well as the northern Ljuboviđa and Lepenica. It lies within the municipalities of Kolašin, Mojkovac, Bijelo Polje, Berane, and Andrijevica.
This mountain stands out for three key advantages: easy access to its highest peaks, a rich forest landscape, and an abundance of flowing water. It also has strong skiing potential and is home to the well-known Montenegrin ski resort Jezerine.
Unlike many other mountains in the region, Bjelasica is of volcanic origin, which gives it its distinctive contrast of green summers and white winters. Streams and rivers cross the landscape, including the beautiful Biogradska River, which flows into the jewel of the mountain, Biogradsko Lake.
The highest peak of Bjelasica is Crna glava, reaching 2,139 meters. Yet the mountain is perhaps best known for its fairytale lakes. There are six in total, and the most attractive and most visited is Biogradsko Lake, located in the heart of Biogradska Gora, one of the three remaining primeval forests in Europe.
