Herceg Novi – Blue Cave – Mamula
As Ivo Andrić once described it, this town of endless greenery, sunlight, and stairways rests between the sea and the hillside, revealing its charm more deeply with every visit.
Herceg Novi is a coastal town in Montenegro, set between Mount Orjen and the entrance to the Bay of Kotor. Many regard it as one of the most beautiful places on the Adriatic, thanks to its architecture, warm sea, and pleasant climate.
The town is rich in natural beauty, with flowers, palm trees, cactus, magnolia, eucalyptus, and many other plant species. Some are so rare that biologists often visit the area, which is why Herceg Novi is also known as “the city of flowers.” Its Pet Danica promenade, Forte Mare fortress, Kanli Kula fortress, churches, countless stone stairways, and narrow streets, along with a variety of restaurants and cafés, create a memorable coastal atmosphere. Blue water, boats at rest in the sun, the sound of waves, and the scent of sea salt complete the experience.
The Blue Cave is considered one of the most fascinating natural sights of its kind in the entire Mediterranean. Its striking blue color appears on sunny summer days, when sunlight reflects off the sea and enters the cave through a smaller opening. Swimming in the crystal-blue water of the Blue Cave is an unforgettable moment for lovers of the sea and natural wonders.
Mamula lies in the Herceg Novi part of the bay, between the Luštica peninsula and Prevlaka, around 3.4 nautical miles from Herceg Novi. Most of the island is occupied by a fortress built in the 19th century by Austro-Hungarian General Lazar Mamula. During World War II, the island was used as a notorious prison known for its cruelty.
