Lovćen is one of Montenegro’s greatest natural symbols, a mountain of freedom rising to 1,749 m above sea level and proclaimed a national park in 1952. On Jezerski vrh, at 1,675 m, stands the Mausoleum of Peter II Petrović Njegoš — bishop, ruler, thinker, and poet, and one of the most significant figures in Montenegrin history. He chose this place for his eternal rest, and from the summit, sweeping views open over much of Montenegro, the Adriatic Sea, and Skadar Lake; in clear weather, the coast of Italy can also be seen. At the foot of Lovćen, at 900 m above sea level, lies Njeguši, Montenegro’s most famous village and the birthplace of the Petrović dynasty, which ruled for 300 years.
