Ayurveda, often described as the science of life, is one of India’s oldest medical systems. Today, it is gaining increasing recognition from medical practitioners worldwide for its focus on understanding illness at the root, rather than simply managing symptoms. The UN and WHO acknowledge Ayurveda as an authentic medical system, and several governments, including the USA, recognize it as a complementary therapy for legal and insurance purposes. Those who have experienced authentic Ayurveda therapies often speak of their effectiveness beyond theory.
Ayurveda is far more than massage or therapy. It is a complete science of living in harmony with nature, allowing nature to support the body’s wellbeing. It offers guidance on diet, lifestyle adjustments, and the mental attitude we bring to our bodies — all of which lie at the foundation of many health concerns.
While formal Ayurveda education in colleges is designed for doctors and requires three to five years of study, resorts and hospitals in Kerala, Goa, and other parts of India usually offer therapies without explaining the deeper principles behind them. Ayurveda can also be found online or through over-the-counter products, but without proper diagnosis based on body-mind constitution, along with the right diet and lifestyle, results may be limited.
For this reason, AyurYoga Eco-Ashram has created short-term Ayurveda courses with training and certification for people who want to apply Ayurveda in daily life. These courses are taught by professional Ayurveda doctors from traditional families in Kerala, where Ayurveda is not just medicine, but a way of life for body and mind.
This training is especially suitable for doctors, nurses, yoga teachers, massage therapists, and other alternative health practitioners who already have some understanding of the human body. A background in modern anatomy and common illnesses can make it easier to approach Ayurveda from a scientific perspective.
At the same time, anyone interested in understanding their own body and living a healthier life is welcome to join.
To receive certification for 100 hours of Ayurveda training, participants must complete at least 8 hours per day and 100 hours across two weeks. The course also includes yoga classes and meditation sessions, as both are considered essential parts of Ayurveda.
Please note that this is not an Ayurveda massage course, although it does briefly cover how to give Ayurveda massages. The certification is not accredited by any government or medical body worldwide.
In addition, the program includes daily meditation for 30 minutes, daily yoga classes for beginners and intermediate students, optional mantra chanting, Ayurveda video presentations, countryside nature walks, and Christmas and New Year celebrations.
Every 7th day is a holiday, with no classes or activities. You may choose to visit Wayanad Forest to explore Ayurveda herbs and traditional Ayurveda families, or go to Mysore. These day trips cost approximately $30 to $50 per person. You may also prefer to rest at the ashram or enjoy Ayurveda treatments on that day.
Ayurveda treatments and oral medication are not included in the course fee, though they are available during the afternoon break at an additional cost.
The course is led by at least four expert teachers and supported by around 15 staff members. Meals at the ashram are designed for international yoga students and are prepared mostly with vegetables from the organic farm or sourced from local farmers.
