Ayurveda, often described as the science of life, is one of India’s oldest medical traditions. Today, it is gaining renewed recognition from medical professionals worldwide for its approach to healing from the root rather than simply managing symptoms. The UN and WHO acknowledge Ayurveda as an authentic medical system, and several governments, including the USA, recognize it as a complementary therapy for legal and insurance purposes. Many people who have experienced authentic Ayurveda therapies can attest to its value beyond theory.
Ayurveda is far more than massage or treatment. It is a comprehensive way of living in harmony with nature, allowing nature to support the body’s balance. Through Ayurveda, we can better understand the right diet, lifestyle adjustments, and mental attitude needed to address the deeper causes of health problems.
While formal Ayurveda education in colleges is designed for doctors and requires three to five years of study, many Ayurveda resorts and hospitals in Kerala, Goa, and elsewhere offer therapies without teaching the deeper principles behind this science. Online information and over-the-counter products are also widely available, but they often fall short because quality can be uncertain and results depend on proper diagnosis, constitution, and lifestyle guidance.
For this reason, AyurYoga Eco-Ashram has created short-term Ayurveda courses with training and certification for everyday people who want to bring Ayurveda into daily life. These courses are taught by professional Ayurveda doctors from traditional families in Kerala, where Ayurveda is not only medicine, but a way of life for body and mind.
This training is especially suitable for doctors, nurses, yoga teachers, massage therapists, and other alternative health practitioners who already have some understanding of the human body. A basic background in anatomy and common illnesses will make the scientific perspective easier to follow.
At the same time, anyone without a medical or health background is welcome if they want to understand their body better and live more healthfully.
To receive certification for the 100-hour Ayurveda training, participants must complete at least 8 hours per day and a total of 100 hours over two weeks. The course also includes yoga classes and meditation sessions, as these are considered an integral part of Ayurveda.
Please note that this is not an Ayurveda massage course, although it briefly covers how to give Ayurveda massages. The certification is not accredited by any government or medical body worldwide.
In addition, the program includes daily meditation for 30 minutes, daily yoga classes for beginners and intermediate students, optional mantra chanting, Ayurveda video screenings, countryside walks, and Christmas and New Year celebrations.
Every 7th day is a holiday with no classes or activities. You may choose a day trip to Wayanad Forest to search for Ayurveda herbs and visit traditional Ayurveda families or places, at an extra cost of about $30 to $50 per person. Mysore can also be visited for the same cost. Alternatively, you may simply rest at the ashram or enjoy Ayurveda treatments.
Ayurveda treatments and oral medication are not included in the course fee, but they may be booked during the afternoon break. The course is led by at least four expert teachers and supported by around 15 staff members. Meals at the ashram are specially prepared for international yoga students, using mostly vegetables from the organic farm or local farmers.
