Tina Pashumati James
Tina Pashumati James carries the name Pashumati — protector of the animals — and her Cree name, Daybreak Woman, reflects how she moves through the world. Given through her relationship with her Indigenous Elders and community, her name speaks to ceremony, service, and right relationship with the land.
For Tina, yoga is not simply something she teaches — it is something she lives.
For more than 30 years, she has guided students through the physical, devotional, and spiritual dimensions of yoga. She is an authorized Senior Ashtanga teacher through Manju Jois (European Academy of Ashtanga Yoga) and an advanced Jivamukti teacher of over 15 years.
Her life has been shaped by devotion and courage.
A former mountaineer, marathoner, competitive equestrian rider, and 8-year Whistler ski patrol member, she has always lived close to the wild. She spent years working with Bear Smart in Whistler to protect bears and educate communities, and has rescued animals throughout her life.
She is a long-term vegan and plant-based advocate, rooted in Ahimsa — non-harming — and speaks openly about the connection between yoga, environmental stewardship, and the protection of sentient beings.
Tina owned and led Loka Yoga for 20 years, building strong community in both England and Canada. Her teachings are steeped in Bhakti devotion and Indigenous ceremony. She continues to work closely with her Elders in sweat lodge and vision quests, and is a 4th-year Sundancer and pipe carrier for her family and community.
She works with people navigating cancer, depression, anxiety, PTSD, addiction recovery, spinal injuries, and mental health challenges — and does so from lived experience, as a cancer survivor herself.
Her practices weave together meditation, mantra, pranayama, advanced asana, shamanic drumming, Vedic chanting, and sound healing — always grounded in respect for the Earth.
Her daily mantra:
Lokah Samastah Sukhino Bhavantu
May all beings everywhere be happy and free.
For Tina, yoga is inseparable from service — to the land, to animals, and to the wellbeing of future generations.
