Leave the busy routes behind and step into the dramatic landscapes of the Apurimac Valley on a private trekking experience to the remarkable Choquequirao ruins. Often described as one of the world’s most extraordinary archaeological sites, Choquequirao is larger than Machu Picchu and can only be reached on foot after several days of demanding hiking. Along the way, you will take part in an ancestral ceremony with a shaman and deepen your connection with Mother Nature through mindful activities. This is a journey for true adventurers seeking both discovery and reflection.
Itinerary
Day 1: Cachora – Ceremony with Shaman – Chikisca
We will collect you from your hotel around 5:00 am and drive for about 4 hours to Cachora. En route, enjoy sweeping views of the landscapes and the snow-capped peaks of Apu Salkantay and Apu Veronica. After breakfast, the trek begins with a Mother Earth Offering led by our Andean Priest, a meaningful moment to set your intention and express gratitude.
The first section includes a 4-hour descent toward the powerful Apurimac River. After lunch, we continue downhill along the eastern Andes slopes to Coca Masana (2330m / 7,644ft). From there, the trail leads to Chiquiska, where the vegetation and wildlife gradually change with the altitude. Dinner and overnight stay will be at a local homestay.
Day 2: Chikiska – Choquequirao – Marampata
This is expected to be the most demanding day of the trek. We begin with a challenging 3-hour climb, with the first views of the Choquequirao ruins appearing along the way. Lunch will be served in Marampata, followed by the continuation to the archaeological site of Choquequirao, “Cradle of Gold.” Once a key control point between the Amazon and Cusco, this sacred Inca citadel features terraces and stone structures set beneath a flattened hilltop, surrounded by carefully arranged stonework.
Our guide will share the history and spiritual meaning of the site, and you will have plenty of time for personal exploration. Later, our spiritual guide will lead a Unification Ceremony to strengthen your connection with the energy of the surroundings. We then hike to Marampata for dinner and rest.
Day 3: Marampata – Chiquiska
Waking up in the middle of the Andes is a memorable experience. After an early breakfast, we begin our descent and return to Chiquiska (1950m / 6,397ft), where we will spend the night. The day offers stunning scenery and a powerful sense of connection with the mountains.
Day 4: Chiquiska – Cachora – Cusco
After a nourishing breakfast, we continue hiking back to Cachora. Following lunch, private transportation will take us to Cusco, where we arrive in the evening.
